Health And Safety Policy
Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Redbridge
Gardeners Redbridge is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks across all services we provide.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health, and property damage arising from our work. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing control measures, and continually improving our health and safety performance. We also recognise our duty to protect the environment and surrounding communities while gardening and maintaining outdoor spaces.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Redbridge has overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety Policy is implemented, communicated, and reviewed on a regular basis. Managers are responsible for planning work so that it can be carried out safely, ensuring that staff receive appropriate training, and providing suitable tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment. Management will monitor compliance with safe systems of work and take action where standards are not met.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee, whether permanent, temporary, or agency, has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Staff must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear personal protective equipment as required, and report hazards, accidents, incidents, near misses, and health concerns to their supervisor promptly. Employees are encouraged to contribute ideas for improving safety in day-to-day gardening work.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting gardening or grounds maintenance tasks, suitable and sufficient risk assessments will be carried out. These assessments consider hazards such as slips and trips, manual handling, use of machinery, exposure to chemicals, noise, vibration, weather conditions, and interaction with the public. Based on the findings, we develop and implement safe working practices to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Risk assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are changes in work methods, equipment, or locations. Staff are made aware of relevant risks and control measures through briefings and ongoing supervision.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Redbridge ensures that employees are competent to carry out their work safely. New staff receive an induction that includes health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures, and safe use of equipment. Where necessary, staff are provided with specialist training, such as safe operation of powered garden machinery, manual handling, use of hazardous substances, and working at height.
Supervisors are responsible for checking that staff understand the training provided and are following safe methods of work. Additional training or refresher sessions will be arranged whenever new equipment or techniques are introduced or where a need for further development is identified.
Tools, Machinery and Equipment
All tools, machinery, and equipment used by Gardeners Redbridge are selected, used, and maintained with safety as a priority. Equipment will be inspected regularly, serviced in line with manufacturer recommendations, and removed from service immediately if found to be unsafe or defective. Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered tools or machinery.
Guards and safety devices must never be removed or bypassed. Staff must check equipment before use and report any faults or defects without delay. We also ensure that appropriate storage arrangements are in place to prevent unauthorised access and to reduce the risk of damage or misuse.
Use of Chemicals and Hazardous Substances
Where gardening or grounds maintenance activities require the use of chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, or cleaning products, these substances will be managed in accordance with relevant safety data and guidance. We will use the least hazardous products that are effective for the task and follow recommended application methods and exposure limits.
All hazardous substances will be stored securely, clearly labelled, and used only by staff who have received proper instruction. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, or eye protection will be provided and must be used when specified.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Redbridge supplies appropriate personal protective equipment based on risk assessments and specific tasks. This may include safety footwear, gloves, high visibility clothing, eye protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection. Employees are required to wear and care for the equipment provided and to report any loss or damage immediately so that replacements can be arranged.
Vehicle and Site Safety
When travelling to and from work locations or transporting materials and equipment, we operate vehicles safely and responsibly. Loads will be secured, and vehicles will be maintained in a roadworthy condition. On arrival at sites, staff will assess access routes, parking, and unloading areas to minimise risks to themselves, clients, and members of the public.
Work areas are organised to keep pathways clear, avoid trip hazards, and separate equipment from public areas where reasonably practicable. Warning signs or barriers may be used when work presents particular risks, such as tree cutting or use of powered machinery.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported as soon as possible. This information is recorded, investigated, and used to identify causes and prevent recurrence. Where necessary, we will review and update our procedures, provide additional training, or change equipment or methods.
Emergency procedures, including first aid arrangements and actions in the event of fire or serious injury, are communicated to staff. Suitable first aid supplies are provided and maintained. Staff are encouraged to familiarise themselves with local emergency services access and any site-specific requirements at client premises.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Gardeners Redbridge values the involvement of employees and clients in improving health and safety. We encourage open communication about hazards, suggestions, and concerns. Feedback is reviewed by management and, where appropriate, built into updated procedures, training, or equipment choices.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective, reflects current legislation and guidance, and supports the safe delivery of our gardening and grounds maintenance services.
